FAQ’s About SeverCorr

What is SeverCorr

SeverCorr is a joint venture of SteelCorr, a group of steel industry veterans and SeverStal, an international steel firm with substantial assets in metallurgy, mining, automobile manufacture, machinery, transportation and other businesses. SeverCorr was organized to build a new state-of-the-art steel mill in the southern United States where demand for high-quality steels has grown rapidly in recent years.

Where is the SeverCorr steel plant being located?

The plant is currently under construction on what developers call a “mega-site” in the northeast corner of Mississippi near Columbus and Starkville. The 1400-acre parcel has room for the plant currently under construction, a planned expansion that could double capacity, as well as sites for partner companies and downstream manufacturers. The site was selected after an exhaustive search of sites within a 12-state area that had sufficient land, access to major road and rail transportation and enough electricity available to power a steel plant with the potential to melt, pour and form more than 50,000 tons of steel every week.

When will the plant begin operations?

Construction is well under way at the mega-site. At the current pace, the plant will be completed during the third quarter of 2007, with various lines and individual pieces of equipment being commissioned during the first half of 2007.

Who is supplying the equipment for this new plant?

The major systems – melt equipment, hot and cold mills, P&O line, galvanizing line, and the temper mill – are being supplied by SMS Demag, the leading supplier of thin slab/hot strip mill technology in the world. Other major supplier include:
  • Bricmont (tunnel furnace)
  • Ebner (batch annealing facilities in the cold mill)
  • GE Energy (substation, power distribution and melt shop electrics)
  • Toshiba (mill drives and automation control systems)

What will the SeverCorr plant produce?

As with any business, SeverCorr’s product mix will respond to customer and marketplace needs. We anticipate that most of the mill output will be dedicated to various types of steel for three major markets:
  • Thin steel for drawing applications in the automotive, and appliance industries (including lawn & garden).
  • Stamping steel for automotive, lawn & garden and light manufacturing applications.
  • Exterior and roofing steel for the building and agriculture industries (including HVAC).
  • /
SeverCorr will also be able to serve specialized industries such as electrical steels and steel stock for pipe & tube. For a deeper look at SeverCorr’s product mix, click on the Products Tab

Who founded SeverCorr?

Why do you call this new plant a “next generation” steel mill?

Because the SeverCorr founders believe that today’s rapidly-changing steel industry requires a new approach with unprecedented ways of doing business. Among them:
  • The partnership of investors that was assembled to create this company is unprecedented in the steel industry. In fact, it was so unique that Project finance magazine named it the North American Industrial deal of the Year in 2005.
  • When the plant becomes fully productive, SeverCorr’s exposed automotive grade steel will be the first ever available outside of an integrated mill, and a major step forward in mill technology.
  • The SeverCorr site will host partner companies that process and manage steel deliveries to end users, an unprecedented partnership between mills and service centers.

How much steel will be produced in the new mill?

The nominal capacity of the steel production equipment being installed is approximately 1.5 million tons of steel per year. The anticipated output is broken into four types of steel:
  • Hot Roll (250,000 tons/year)
  • Hot Roll Pickled & Oiled (250,000 tons/year)
  • Cold Roll (600,000 tons/year)
  • Coated Steel (400,000 tons/year)
If demand in the market area grows, SeverCorr can double output to 3 million tons per year, with the addition of a second phase of the mill.

What are the raw materials for the plant?

The new mill is a vast recycler of ferrous scrap gathered from around the globe….more than a million tons of scrap a year will be melted and re-formed in Phase One of the SeverCorr plant. Most of the scrap will arrive by barge on the Tennessee-Tombigbee channel, a few miles from the plant.

How can the U.S. steel industry deal with yet another steel company?

The U.S. uses about 130 million tons of steel per year, yet only about 100 million tons is currently produced domestically. That means steel is being imported across large distances, which offers a tremendous opportunity for a local producer that is both highly efficient and close to their end user markets. SeverCorr offers both to customers in its 15-state service area.
